Principle 03

Patience and Temperament

Patience and temperament matter more than activity. Quiet periods are acceptable when there is nothing attractive to do.

Patience and temperament matter more than activity. We may have quiet periods. Sometimes the right decision is to do nothing.

That sounds simple, but it may be the most challenging part of the discipline.

No market predictions

We are not in the business of predicting general stock market trends or short-term movements. We do our own research, avoid forecasts and fads, and stay within our circle of competence.

This means we may miss popular market opportunities when we do not fully understand the business. That is acceptable. Popularity is not the standard; understanding is.

Waiting for the fat pitch

When opportunities are scarce, we wait. When value is clear, we act decisively. The point is not to be inactive; the point is to avoid forcing decisions just because the market is moving.

Short-term fluctuations do not concern us the same way permanent impairment does. The work is to keep temperament tied to business facts, not to the emotion of the latest quote.
